Your Forehand Does Not Need to Be Broken to Explore It

This is the second of three connected reflections. The first, I Called Them Match Experiments, explains how I used parts of real matches to remain with unfamiliar possibilities long enough to learn from them.

Before I was a coach, I spent a great deal of time looking for ideas about tennis.

One day I watched a YouTube video called The Paradoxical Nature of Modern Topspin. It described a specific way of organising the forehand through what the creator called the press slot. The explanation was detailed and technical, and something about it made me curious enough to try it.

I had a match later that day.

During the warm-up, I tried to find the movement and calibrate the contact. The ball was leaving my racket with much more spin. I could find angles that were not normally available to me, and the extra shape helped many balls come back down into the court. I was also shanking more forehands.

I decided that this would be my match experiment for the day and kept using it.

I won against that opponent for the first time.

Curiosity is different from diagnosis

The result stayed in my memory because the new forehand seemed to change the match. I produced more spin, found different angles and repeatedly brought down balls that might previously have travelled long.

It does not prove that the movement in the video caused the victory or that everybody should try the same idea. The opponent had a particular game, I had committed to a clear intention and many things inside a match affect one another. It was one unusually immediate result among many experiments that had first produced errors, heavy defeats or much smaller discoveries.

The more important part was my relationship with the idea.

I did not watch the video and decide that my forehand had been wrong until that moment. I was not searching for somebody to diagnose a broken stroke. I saw a possible way of organising the movement and wondered what it might add.

My question was closer to:

What kind of ball might become available to me if I explore this?

That difference gave me room to commit seriously to the experiment without promising to keep the answer. The shanks did not prove that the idea was bad, and the victory did not prove that it was universally right. Both became information about what happened when that possibility met my body, this opponent and the demands of a match.

Most ideas will not transform your forehand

Tennis content often promises a fix. One grip, preparation, contact point or follow-through appears to explain why a forehand is not working and what must replace it.

My experience of exploring was much less tidy. Most ideas did not transform anything. Some created an interesting feeling that disappeared under pressure. Some gave me a small option rather than a new stroke. Some became useful only against a particular height or when I wanted a particular trajectory. Their value was often conditional and much quieter than the original explanation suggested.

That does not make curiosity pointless. It changes what we expect curiosity to produce.

Exploration does not need to begin with the belief that your forehand is broken. It can begin with the possibility that your forehand does not yet contain every solution you might find.

Your existing forehand may already help you compete, create pressure and enjoy the game. Respecting that does not require protecting it from every unfamiliar idea. A functional solution can remain functional while you explore what else might sit beside it.

Giving the idea a fair encounter with tennis

A video can introduce a movement and explain why its creator values it. It cannot show exactly what that movement will become in another player’s game.

For me, the warm-up provided time to find an initial feeling. The match then added the ball I was actually receiving, my movement towards contact, the opponent’s position and the consequence of each choice. The forehand stopped being only an arrangement of body parts I was trying to reproduce. It began creating a ball that another person had to solve.

Some contacts gave me height and margin. Some opened the court through spin. Some balls arrived too quickly for the movement to organise comfortably. Some produced the trade-off I had already noticed: more shape, but more chances to find the frame.

The useful questions became less about whether I looked like the demonstration and more about fit:

  • What does this possibility help me create?
  • Which balls give me enough time and space to find it?
  • What does it add to the solutions I already trust?
  • What does it cost me?
  • What remains after the initial novelty disappears?

A basket, warm-up or cooperative rally may help someone enter the exploration. Bringing it towards points and matches allows the game to participate in the answer.

What remained was not a replacement forehand

A few months later, I do not use that organisation on every forehand. I recognise situations in which it helps me create a particular shape, and others in which a different solution fits better.

That feels more meaningful than having installed the forehand from a video. The experiment added something to my toolbox, but the tool does not decide when it should be used. That understanding developed through meeting different balls and seeing what the movement allowed me to do with them.

The same can happen with a backhand, serve, return or volley. An unfamiliar idea may reveal an important solution, a very occasional option or almost nothing you want to keep. The willingness to explore matters precisely because the answer is not already guaranteed.

Somebody else gave me this possibility. Choosing it, testing it and discovering where it fitted made the exploration mine.

The final part of this reflection turns towards a more difficult situation. Sometimes we choose an outside idea because it makes us curious. At other times, a coach, friend or opponent arrives with certainty about what our tennis must become. Being open to their knowledge does not require handing them ownership of the journey.
